I am delighted by the Governments news to support our aviation sector recovery with airport slot alleviation for Summer 2022.
Current rules mean that, in order to retain key slots airlines have had to operate flights even when there was little demand, a practice that caused unnecessary costs for airlines and emissions for the environment. The changes announced will now allow the aviation sector greater flexibility, supporting jobs and businesses and helping to protect our environment.

This Government announcement is a further step on the path to recovery for our aviation and travel sectors. I have been campaigning on behalf of these sectors throughout the pandemic, for support for the industries, investment in sustainable fuels and aviation and including for international safety standards to be agreed. Runnymede and Weybridge benefits hugely from close links to Heathrow, Gatwick and London, which help make the constituency one of the best places in the UK to work and set up a business.
I believe the best way to support the sector is to encourage investment and innovation to create a more sustainable sector. By reducing unnecessary costs I hope that the sector will be able to bounce back, protect jobs and refocus their efforts on aims to reduce noise and air pollution, and their role in achieving our climate change objectives. I welcome the Government’s commitment to Jet Zero and the support for the development of sustainable aviation fuels. I have called for reform of Air Passenger Duty to reward airlines who drive this agenda forward and have submitted a response to a recent Government consultation on this. Once again, this is welcomed news and I look forward to seeing many more aircraft fly again taking my constituents across the world in the coming Summer months
