I was delighted to visit Chertsey High School and meet their inspirational staff and students last week.
Chertsey High School have solid core values, acknowledging that every child is unique, and the school encourages their students to learn respect, responsibility, determination and provide them with the knowledge they need to make the right decisions in the future.
There is a real sense of love and care for each student, and this can be seen when I was given a tour of the school by Headteacher Zelia Munnik, who was able to personally acknowledge and speak to every student by name. Zelia’s enthusiasm and passion to make Chertsey High School a safe haven for her students is clear to see. A core offering of the school is a range of specialist teaching and facilities they offer for children with special educational needs, which is very impressive and something which the team is quite rightly particularly proud of.
When having a tour of the school, it was clear that thoughts of covid were still present in students’ minds, with many wearing facemasks in class.
The school itself is very well presented and the corridors are laid out by subjects. When entering the classrooms, I was impressed by how polite the students were when answering questions and the enthusiasm from their teachers was inspirational to see. The students quizzed me on current government decisions and as with all my school visits are my most tough questioners!
After the tour, I was greeted by the school’s Year 6 Student Leadership Team, where I was asked about my role as their local MP and I was able to speak to them about what their future aspirations were, including being a doctor or a MP! I’d like to thank all the students I spoke with on my visit, the Student Leadership Team and especially Zelia for the great visit and I look forward to visiting the Chertsey High School again soon.
