Virtually all residents will have experienced noise and pollution from the motorways that dissect our constituency. It affects not just those who live next to the motorway but all who work, play or go to school in the local area.
The restrictions during the pandemic saw a significant fall in traffic volumes, and a resulting drop in noise and air pollution. My aim is to see those benefits returned even with normal traffic volumes through improvements in our infrastructure and in the use of more sustainable fuels and technology.
The concrete surface of the M25 remains one of the biggest problems for road noise. While an ongoing study on the M1 may offer some future opportunities, I am calling for improvements now to both the road surface and the noise barriers. Improvements also need to be made to our local road network, and in recent months, I have held several meetings with Highways England and Surrey Cabinet Member for Highways to discuss ways to mitigate noise pollution and deliver road improvements. I have requested detailed data on completed and scheduled motorway repairs in the constituency, and I will continue to engage with Highways England on further ways to address these issues and ensure they are the top of the agency’s agenda.
