The Supreme Court has today reinstated the Government’s airports strategy, enabling plans for a third runway to again be considered. This ruling overturns a decision by the Court of Appeal in February which said the Government’s strategy did not meet UK climate targets.
Commenting on the ruling, Runnymede and Weybridge MP Dr Ben Spencer said:
I did not support plans for a third runway at Heathrow as I did not see how this is compatible with the pledge to reduce aviation noise, air pollution, and the impact the airport has on surrounding communities. I have been working closely with the aviation sector over the past year and have had many discussions around the need to prioritise sustainability as the sector builds back from the pandemic.
In light of today’s announcement I look forward to continuing discussions with Heathrow Airport Ltd on how they would ensure any future proposals would address these issues and ensure meaningful ongoing engagement with the communities affected.
