Dr Ben Spencer MP has today submitted a response strongly supporting plans by Surrey County Council to introduce a new lane rental scheme to minimise traffic disruption and delay on our roads.
North West Surrey has some of the highest levels of road usage in the region, with delays across Surrey being consistently higher than in neighbouring counties. The proposals for a new lane rental scheme will support the existing permit scheme and encourage those undertaking street works to plan and manage roadworks to minimise the impact on our communities.
Even this year we have seen examples of roadworks causing major delays on our core routes, including the A320, the A317 and A30. To support our communities and our local economy we must improve our local infrastructure and reduce disruption. I therefore fully support the proposed Lane rental Scheme for Surrey, the benefits of which are estimated at over £160 million over the next 10 years. The use of similar schemes in London and Kent have delivered improvements for motorists and local businesses. This comes at the end of a busy week of news for local transport and infrastructure issues, with the new Runnymede Transport Initiative approved on Monday, and a consultation on current planning policy closing yesterday. Dr Spencer’s submission to this consultation can be found here.
The issue of sustainable infrastructure was also raised with week by the Runnymede and Weybridge MP at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday. Dr Spencer highlighted that, while his constituency benefits from its transport links, this does come at a cost of noise and air pollution, and called on the PM to ensure that as the economic is rebuilt post covid new infrastructure is sustainable and minimises this impact on local communities.
