The Government has announced further support for the travel sector by supporting the ATOL scheme to ensure customers receive compensation payments where due. Measures are also being taken to extend consumer protections for customers who accept travel vouchers in lieu of refunds, boosting confidence in the sector and helping to support travel businesses.
Dr Ben Spencer, MP for Runnymede and Weybridge, welcomed the announcement
We all know the aviation industry has been hard hit by this pandemic. I have been calling on Government to support the sector, and am delighted with the introduction of these measures, boosting confidence and resilience.
By ensuring protections for consumers, while maintaining cash flow and supporting flexibility for travel operators, the Government is providing much needed support to our aviation and travel industries.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said:
We want to send a clear message to passengers that they can book their summer holidays with confidence, which is why we’re stepping in to protect refund credit notes issued as a result of COVID-19 cancellations.
This is not only good news for anyone looking to get away for a break in the sun, but also for the aviation and travel sector which has been hit hard by the pandemic.
These measures build on the support already introduced for the sector, including the publication of safer air travel guidance for passengers and operators, and the introduction of travel corridors.
