It was a pleasure to attend the ground-breaking ceremony for the new mental health hospital to be built on the St Peter’s Hospital site in Chertsey.
The event marked the start of the construction of the hospital, on the former Abraham Cowley Unit site, replacing the former mental health unit with state of the art modern facilities able to provide the care and support that patients need, often at one of the most difficult times of their lives.
Having worked in various mental health hospitals in my former career, I know what an impact the right services can have on patient care and improving outcomes. I have been impressed by both the plans in place and the excellent team that has been put together to deliver them, and look forward to the continued progress and planned completion of the hospital in Spring 2024.
The new hospital will provide four new wards, housing 64 beds in total, all with single ensuite bedrooms to provide greater privacy and dignity for patients. The plans also include a variety of dedicated spaces including activity, therapy, and sensory-type calm rooms. There will also be greater access to outdoor space, with each ward having a dedicated garden.
