Last weekend it was great to meet with my Weybridge residents at a rally in support of the people of Ukraine. We heard yet more examples of the fantastic support our community has been providing, including the work of Paul McCarthy and Andy Maple who have raised over £36,000 and co-ordinated a convoy of vans taking much needed supplies to the people of Ukraine. You can find out more about their work here.
I am grateful to Lesia Scholey and Cllr Charu Sood for organising the event. I was pleased to have the opportunity to meet with Lesia last week to discuss in detail our support for Ukraine and how we can do more to support Ukrainian refugees. I also attended the Weybridge International School of English (WISE) Open day and support their Ukraine Appeal on Friday, which raised £1000. WISE are keen to set up courses for Ukrainian refugees arriving locally who wish to learn English as a second language. I have contacted Surrey County Council regarding the work they are doing to support refugees and to offer WISE’s support.
St Mary’s Church in Oatlands is also hosting a fundraising dinner for the people of Ukraine this coming Friday, and there are many, many other events and contributions taking place across the community.
It will come as no surprise that I have received many emails, calls and letters from residents concerned over the situation in Ukraine and wanting to know how we can support those having to flee their homes. If you are interested in hosting refugees you can find out more information about the Homes for Ukraine scheme and register your support here. Thank you to everyone is working to help Ukrainian people affected by this awful conflict, and for those of you who are signing up for the Homes for Ukraine scheme, do let me know how you get on and let me know if there is anything I can do to help at [email protected]
