As Vice-Chair of the British-Swedish All Party Parliamentary Group (and Chair of the Finland APPG) I welcome the Prime Minister’s visit to Sweden today and the mutual commitment of support should either country be attacked.
The UK has strong ties with Scandinavia and I am proud to support efforts to ensure greater co-operation between Britain, Sweden and Finland. Last month I Chaired a meeting with the Finnish Ambassador for MPs and Peers to hear about Finland’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine alongside a range of topics relating to Finland and its relationship with the UK.
These current visits and meetings are being driven by Russia’s invasion and continued aggression in Ukraine. While I am delighted our nations are forging closer ties in response to these events, we cannot forget that every day the conflict continues brings further uncertainty in Europe and further suffering to the Ukrainian people.
In addition to encouraging greater co-operation with our international allies, my team and I are working hard to support visa applications for Ukrainian refugees and their sponsors across Runnymede and Weybridge. From my latest update in my newsletter, I am pleased to have been able to help 38 refugees successfully travel to the UK to date, and continue to assist a number of cases who have experienced issues or delays.
