As we approach the start of the new academic year I am excited for the opportunities it will bring. Working with our schools and colleges and engaging with students across the constituency is one of the highlights of my role, and I am always inspired by their energy and enthusiasm for the opportunities that await.
To help support this, I have been developing an idea to support schools and skills which would seek to enable partnership working between our schools and colleges and local businesses, so students can learn first hand of the local opportunities available to them as they move into the world of work, and the skills they will need to pursue their chosen careers.
I am delighted that UKAS, the UK Accreditation service based in the constituency, has kindly offered to provide support for this initiative. I believe it has the real potential to help the next generation plan for the future - this could help in providing speakers for career days, providing work experience opportunities, and attending careers fairs, but will develop around the needs of both students and businesses involved.
I am looking to meet with our schools and colleges this autumn to discuss the practical design and implementation of such a scheme, but would also welcome input from local businesses keen to support this initiative. If you own or work in a local business and would like to be involved please sign up to register your support here.
