I have today submitted my response to the River Thames Scheme public consultation. The key message that I have conveyed to the consultation is that the RTS needs to be built as soon as possible.
This is a project which is of vital importance to so many residents of Runnymede and Weybridge who are affected by the threat of regular flooding and who care passionately about preserving and enhancing our natural environment.
I welcome that residents have had the opportunity to communicate their feedback on this hugely important piece of infrastructure, including on the environmental impact of the RTS. It is right that these are taken into account and where possible risks mitigated. However, the primary focus of this project is, and must continue to be, flood alleviation.
I have also highlighted that, once the RTS flood channels are in place, a robust environmental enforcement regime will be needed to ensure the waterways remain free from obstructions and pollution so that the scheme can deliver maximum flood relief, as well as environmental benefits.
I am grateful to everyone who is working hard to deliver the RTS for the benefit of our community, and to all members of the public who have taken the time to share their views as part of this consultation. Their input will help to ensure that the RTS serves our area in the way which benefits residents most.
In the meantime, I will continue my work with statutory authorities to ensure that measures are put in place to mitigate the ongoing challenges presented by flooding in advance of the RTS’ construction.
