The choice of the Unions to disrupt transport networks and cause misery and delays for tens of thousands of people is simply disgraceful. Today’s strikes are hitting students taking their exams and commuters, will hurt businesses and will harm our economy. As the Bank of England warned, the high pay rises the Unions are demanding would push up rail prices further, fueling inflation, and making it harder to invest in the service improvements we need.
It is totally irresponsible and economically illiterate. I am calling for the Government to take swift action to prevent such disruption in future. So I have written to the Transport Secretary, the Rt Hon. Grant Shapps MP, to put forward my support to legislate to strengthen rules regarding strike action which affects essential national infrastructure, and ensure they can no longer hold the country to ransom.
