Recently I had the opportunity to visit Core Judo on Thorpe Green and see the simply incredible work Jonathan Purssey and his team have put in to transforming a run-down site into a beautiful dojo, complete with a huge matted area for training, a café and gym. I got to see Jonathan and his team training children at their Friday scholars' class where children from the free school meal programme receive a healthy cooked meal for themselves and their families provided by a local chef. As you can see, I also had the privilege of being thrown to the ground by Jonathan, and trying out the move myself, which was great fun!
I spoke to Jonathan about the team’s application to Your Fund Surrey for Thorpe Green Car Park and Community Fitness project, which aims to deliver improved local facilities including an upgraded car park and outdoor fitness centre. Core Judo are looking to take the hard work and drive which has gone into the dojo and put it to work for all the community in Thorpe Green. I was very happy to write to Surrey County Council in support of this application, and you can find my letter below.
You can find further information about the community the project here, and also find out more about Core Judo at: https://www.corejudo.co.uk/.
