Events over the weekend in Israel are both shocking and incredibly worrying. While the conflict between Israel and Palestine is long and deep rooted, the events this weekend were not those of two nations at war, but rather a terrorist attack on Israel carried out by Hamas – a proscribed terrorist organisation in the UK. This attack saw thousands of rockets fired into Israel, and terrorists enter the country, murdering men, women, and children, and abducting dozens of people. I absolutely and unreservedly condemn the appalling and inhuman acts of terror committed by Hamas. Israel has a right to defend itself and the UK stands with Israel against terrorism.
Today my real fear, shared by many, is where this violence will lead, both for the Israeli and Palestinian people, and the broader impact this conflict will have. My heartfelt thoughts are with all civilians caught up in this conflict whose lives and families have been affected. Huge efforts are being made globally through diplomatic channels to try to reduce tensions and prevent further escalation beyond Israel’s borders.
As we have seen in Ukraine, conflict has significant consequences around the world. Destabilisation in the Middle East would be dangerous for global security, risk the lives of many, many more innocent civilians, and have a direct impact on residents in the UK and around the world. There are already signs the conflict will affect global markets and increase cost pressures.
We have also already seen warnings in London of the increased risks of hate crime, with more police patrolling the streets. I have reached out to our Police and Crime Commissioner, as well as policing teams in Runnymede and Elmbridge. They have already been in contact with local religious communities to offer support and reassurance and are in touch with Royal Holloway University. The police are encouraging residents to report and concerns or incidents by 101 after the fact, or 999 in an emergency.
My thoughts and prayers remain with all those affected by these events. I sincerely hope that all efforts will be made to protect civilians on both sides caught in this conflict, and ultimate to work to restore and forge a lasting peace.
