Everyone should have access to our local public transport, which is why I’ve fought so hard to ensure the Weybridge lifts work and all local travel is accessible. To continue my campaign, I met with the Rail Minister, Huw Merriman, with local rail accessibility champion Tim Blanchard, to discuss the impact the repeated local issues have had, and the changes needed. Tim highlighted to the Minister the need not only for better infrastructure, but also reliable data.
A recent example highlighted its importance: when online information showed lifts out of order, some passengers incorrectly believed they could not access the service. Sometimes the system falsely shows they are working, passengers can be stranded on platforms unable to exit the station. Without reliable infrastructure and accurate service information disabled passengers, parents with pushchairs and people with mobility needs face unnecessary disruption or even feel unable to travel.
Tim expertly set out the impact this had had on his ability to commute to work and see friends and family. He highlighted if these problems exist here, how many other people around the country are experiencing the same?
The Minister agreed that this needed to be addressed, and will be discussing the issues raised with members of the National Rail Disability Group, an advisory body to the Department, and looking at what further action can be taken to strengthen the requirements on train operators, to ensure their services are accessible to all.
